Basil has been used as a medicinal plant, which are rich antioxidant and antibacterial properties. As well as Basil is rich in  vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, manganese, iron, calcium and magnesium.

1) Flavonoids found in basil provide protection at the cellular level. Orientin and vicenin are two water-soluble flavonoids that have been of particular interest in basil, and in studies on human white blood cells; these components of basil protect cell structures as well as chromosomes from radiation and oxygen-based damage.

2) Basil leaves compose of many health benefiting essential oils such as eugenol, citronellol, linalool, citral, limonene, and terpineol. These compounds are known to have anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.

3) Basil contains exceptionally high levels of beta-carotene, cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin. These compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease processes.

5) Basil herb contains a good amount of minerals like potassium, manganese, copper, iron, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids, which helps control heart rate and blood pressure. Manganese promotes cardiovascular health by prompting muscles and blood vessels to relax, thus improving blood flow and lessening the risk of irregular heart rhythms or a spasming of the heart muscle or a blood vessel.

How to Use Basil

Basil used as a seasoning herb for a variety of foods, they can be used whole, chopped, crushed into a paste or dried. Enjoy basil leaves in salads, blend and puree into sauces and oil. Serve chopped basil with garlic and olive oil to make a dairy-free variety of pesto that can top a variety of dishes including pizza, pasta, chicken and fish.
